We have s all around us in our houses, schools, libraries, stores… They are extremely vital because they transport us across space. Think of walking into your classroom or your bedroom; those doors are what allow us to go in and out of those places. Sometimes doors are open, which helps us feel welcome to come in, and sometimes they are closed, which means we must knock or wait to be let in. We open and shut doors to access new spaces, and to exit our old spaces. What we gain, on the other hand, are a few new insights about how doors work, whether those doors take the form of a round knob or a long handle, whether they swing open or slide to the side — all doors, it turns out, do a similar job. They provide a protection and a break for us as we pass from one room, a private area, to the next.
Doors have been around for ages, longer than probably any of us can imagine. Long ago, ancient Egyptians used strong materials like stone and wood to create doors in order to protect their homes from both thieves and the elements. The Greeks and Romans also had doors, usually fashioned from shiny bronze or strong iron which they’d lock with special keys. In Western Medieval Europe new much more elegantly formed and favourably colour coated glass were also later created to add even more beautiful appearance to the doors. Today, doors are offered in many different styles, colors, and materials. Some doors are thick and heavy, while others are glass or decorated with beautiful designs that allow sunlight to shine through.
We have some doors in our house, each leading to a separate room/space. Some lead into the cozy bedrooms where we snuggle and sleep and dream, others into the busy living rooms where families gather to talk and play. We even have doors that open to soothing baths where we can cleanse ourselves and prepare to face the day. Each additional room serves a special purpose and a different feeling. We can close the door, creating a private space, and select who enters our space. Some doors even carry a lock that helps us keep certain locations private and away from strangers.
Motion of doors can also symbolize the various transitions we go through in the passage of life. We all start as kids and grow into adults, passing through various spaces and challenges along the way. Some doors might be easy to walk through, like a doorway into a new, fun activity, and others might be harder to get through, like a doorway into a difficult situation. Sometimes doors shut behind us as we move on from old places and friendships, and we can still feel the pull of their presence. At other times, our doors seem to fly open, inviting us into new opportunities and experiences. Since entering through any door is a new part of our life journey.
Doors can also symbolize the opportunities that await us. They may provide us opportunities to meet new strangers, to go to fantastic new places, to do different activities. A door could take us to a friend, a hobby or a job someday. Like doors, these opportunities may open and close all the time. We must take notice and be prepared to seize those opportunities as they arise. If we do not pay heed, we might be losing out on something new!
